STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE – Objects in the rear view mirror...-Diorama

Scale: Small...

Tell me: Haven`t you also often taken place in an X-Wing, with full speed ahead flying into the Death Star trench to destroy this evil weapon with the help of the Force? Unforgettable the chase at the end of the battle with Lord Vader preparing for the final shot: „I have you now!“...

Exact this scene is represented by my little diorama. I used good, old Micro-Machines of an X-wing, two TIEs and Vaders TIE-fighter. I own them for a loooong time, but now I was able to arrange them properly with the beautiful Death Star panels made by Wolfgang Bittermann. The surrounding base and nameplates are made out of cardboard.

I glued two sets of the panels on the groundbase, followed by the positioning of the fighters. I drilled holes for some acrylic rods to support them. The Death Star surface was painted in various shades of grey and heavily drybrushed, using a coarse brush. With this I create brushstrokes to show the illusion of some movement. To do so I brushed ONLY from the front end to the aft end. The overall color is a bit darker than it should be compared to the movie, but I wanted to make sure to have enough contrast to the Micro-Machines.

I modificated the X-Wing a lot, for example I made completely new guns and reworked the paintjob. The TIEs are unmodificated.

To build the laserfire of Vader I drilled two 1 mm holes into the fighter. The shots are made from acrylic rods, painted with a bright green from Citadel / Games Workshop („Scorpion green“).

I wasn`t able to choose a name for that diorama, so it comes to a premiere: The model has two names and also two nameplates. The main titel has to be taken with the wink of an eye: „Objects in the rear view mirror are closer than they appear...“. The subtitel is a quotation from the movie: „I have you now!“, placed behind the TIEs so that you have the correct point of view to the model while reading this one.

So now just one thing left to say: „YAHOOOOO! You`re all clear, kid. Now let‘s blow this thing and go home!“
